2007 Dedication Festival

Dedication service cover

The Parish of Poplar was founded in 1817 and All Saints Church completed and consecrated in 1823 on July 3rd. This year we celebrated our Dedication Festival on Sunday July 8th, welcoming Father Patrick Appleford to share the occassion with us. He was a curate in the Church many years ago and is well known for his hymn writing.

He has written a new hymn - Glory be to God the Father - especially for this service which is reproduced below.

Glory be to God the Father
Who so loves the human race,
He has sent his Son to make us
Saints abounding with his grace:
Drawn together by the Spirit,
Saints in fellowship adore
Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
God be praised for evermore

Skills and virtues without number
Saints have practised year by year,
Courage in the face of sickness,
Hope transcending death and fear;
Even human faults transfigured
Witness to the power of love;
God forgives, affirms, enlivens
All his saints, below, above

  Prophets preaching social justice
Quiet souls alive with prayer,
Scholars seeking truth and wisdom,
Women, men who love and care;
Young disciples, lively, learning
Old disciples full of fun,
Saints from every race and nation
With their God for ever one.

Father Patrick also wrote one of our "old favourites" whilst he was a curate at All Saints 50 years ago.

Lord Jesus Christ,
You have come to us,
You are one with us,
Mary's son;
Cleansing our souls from all their sin,
Pouring your love and goodness in;
Jesus, our love for you we sing,
Living Lord

Lord Jesus Christ,
Now and every day
Teach us how to pray,
Son of God.
You have commanded us to do
This is remembrance, Lord, of you:
Into our pives your power breaks through,
Living Lord

Lord Jesus Christ,
You have come to us,
Born as one of us,
Mary's Son;
Led out to die on Calvary,
Risen from death to set us free,
Living Lord Jesus, help us see
You are Lord

Lord Jesus Christ,
I would come to you,
Live my life for you,
Son of God.
All your commands I know are true,
Your many gifts will make me new,
Into my life your power breaks through,
Living Lord

Patrick Appleford (born 1924), hymn written whilst a curate at All Saints, Poplar 1952-8. It was good to welcome several old friends of Poplar who came to the service today. Some of their stories should appear here shortly.
